Goals

Small goals keep streaks alive. 10–20 pages a day is about a book a month. Listening counts too: 2 minutes of audio = 1 page. Daily Review brings back a few saved quotes each day (0 turns it off).

Appearance

Text size, typeface and page-turn sound are under Aa while reading.

Backup & restore

Save backup now (Ctrl S, also in the Data menu at the top) writes the .json backup (books, notes, quotes and sessions; the best file to restore from) to the file you chose, replacing the previous copy. If you've also set up a .csv spreadsheet copy, it's updated at the same time. The .zip also holds your PDF, EPUB and audio files. Importing merges: books already here are skipped. Older mbreading .json/.csv files and mbpdf .zip backups import too.

Help

What can I add?
  • Any book, by title: search Open Library or type the details. Log pages by hand.
  • PDFs and EPUBs to read here or have read aloud. Your pages are logged for you as you read.
  • Text, Markdown and web pages: .txt, .md and saved .html files, or Paste text in the Add dialog. They become books you can read, listen to, highlight and search.
  • Audiobooks: MP3 and M4A/M4B are the safest bets. Add several files at once and choose: one book or separate books.
  • Backups: a .zip or .json from this app, an older mbreading .csv, or an mbpdf .zip.
  • A file for a book you already track: open the book and choose Attach a file. Your notes and history stay.
How does automatic logging work?

When you turn pages forward in the reader, one page or one spread at a time, those pages are added to today's total. Jumping ahead with the slider, contents or search moves your place without counting the pages you skipped, and re-reading the same page on the same day only counts once.

EPUB page counts depend on your text size, so progress is measured in estimated print pages (about 275 words each). Audiobooks count 1 page for every 2 minutes you listen. Automatic sessions are marked auto on the book's page and can be deleted like any other.

How do I listen to a book?

Open it and tap the headphones, or press P. It reads on and turns the pages for you.

  • Set the voice, speed and sleep timer in the player.
  • In Text mode and EPUBs, the sentence being read is highlighted. Tap any sentence to read from there.
  • Pick an “On this device” voice to keep the text private. Online voices send it to their provider.
  • Cleaner listening (under Aa, or the settings button in the player): skip repeating PDF headers and footers, skip footnote numbers like [12], read web addresses as “link”, and add your own pronunciations, one per line, like Nguyen = win.
How do highlights and Daily Review work?

Select a passage in Text mode or an EPUB and tap Save quote. It stays highlighted in the text, and you can add a note to it. On a quote's card, the book icon opens the book at that passage.

Daily Review brings back a few saved quotes each day, on the Today page and under Quotes. Your answer sets when you see it next: “See again soon” means tomorrow, “Later” a few days, and “Much later” a week or more. The gaps grow each time. Give a quote a question (the pencil button) and it becomes a flashcard: you see the question first, then the quote. Choose how many a day in Settings › Goals, or set it to 0 to turn Daily Review off.

Keys in Daily Review: Space shows the answer, and 1 to 4 pick a button.

Can I search inside my books?

Yes. Type at least three letters in the search box at the top, then choose Search inside books in the Library. The first search reads each PDF and EPUB once, on this device, and keeps a text index in this browser, so later searches are quick. Tap a result to open the book there. Inside a book, the magnifier (or /) searches just that book.

How do streaks work?
Any day you log at least one page counts. Your streak stays alive through today even if you haven't read yet; it resets if a full day passes with no pages logged. You can log for a past day using the date field.
Why won't a file open or read aloud?
  • Locked files: password-protected PDFs and DRM-protected EPUBs can't be opened.
  • Scanned PDFs open, but have no text until it's recognized. When the app spots one it offers Recognize text; you can also use the buttons on empty pages in Text mode. Recognition runs on this device (English only), takes a few seconds a page, and the result is saved with the book. The first time, about 7 MB of recognition files load from this site; after that it works offline.
  • Audio your browser can't play: convert it to MP3 or M4A.
Can I install it like an app?

Yes. In Chrome or Edge, use the Install button on the Install Reading card in Settings & Help (or the install icon in the address bar). On iPhone or iPad, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. The installed app opens full screen and keeps working with no signal. Your data stays in the browser it was installed from; installing doesn't move or copy it.

Where is my data stored?

In this browser, on this device. You don't need an account, and nothing is uploaded unless you turn on sync (Settings › Sync across devices), which copies your books, notes, quotes and reading history (not your files) to a free mcbflow.com account. Clearing your browser's site data deletes this device's copy, so use Save backup now in the Data menu (or press Ctrl S) every so often. In Chrome or Edge on a computer you choose the file once and each save updates it. The “Backed up” label next to Data turns amber after a week.

Privacy, terms and credits

Privacy policy

Short version: reading.mcbflow.com has no analytics, ads or cookies, and you don't need an account. Your books, files, notes and reading history stay in this browser. If you choose to sign in to sync, your books, notes, quotes and reading history (never your files) are also kept in your mcbflow.com account.

What's saved on your device

  • localStorage (“reading”): your library list, reading sessions, notes, quotes (with their notes, questions and Daily Review schedule), ratings, goals and app settings.
  • localStorage (“reading.reader”): reader display and player settings, your read-aloud pronunciations, and when you last made a backup.
  • Browser database (IndexedDB, named “reading.library”): the PDF, EPUB and audio files you add (text, Markdown and web page files are stored as EPUBs), their covers, your place in each, bookmarks and bookmark notes, text recognized from scanned pages, and a text index of your books once you use Search inside books.
  • Offline copy of the app (browser cache): a service worker keeps a copy of this app's own files (its code, icons, the PDF engine and the page-flip library, and the text-recognition files once you've used them) so it opens with no signal. It holds no books, files, notes or history.
  • Browser database (IndexedDB, named “reading.backup”): if you choose where backups are saved, your browser's permission to update those backup files. It holds no copy of your data, and the page never sees the folder path.

This stays until you delete it: delete a book or its file from the book's page, use Erase all data in this browser in Settings, or clear this site's data in your browser settings. Save backup now and Export All save copies to files on your device, and Import Backup brings them back.

What leaves your device

  • Book search: when you use “Find a book”, only the words you type are sent to Open Library (openlibrary.org, run by the non-profit Internet Archive). Cover images load from covers.openlibrary.org. If you paste your own cover image URL when editing a book, that image loads from the site you pasted. Your library, notes and history are never sent.
  • Share images: the Share buttons (on your streak, a finished book and Stats) draw a picture on this device. It goes nowhere unless you save it or send it with your device's share menu. Book titles are left off unless you turn them on.
  • Code: the PDF engine (PDF.js), its font and character files, the page-flip library and the text-recognition engine (Tesseract) with its English data are served from this site itself, not from another company's servers.
  • Text recognition of scanned pages, Search inside books, highlights, Daily Review and Markdown exports all run on your device. Page images and book text are never uploaded.
  • Read aloud: voices listed under “On this device” run locally. Voices listed under “Online” send the text being read to the company that provides the voice (for example Google or Microsoft), under that company's terms. An on-device voice is picked by default when there is one.
  • Optional sync: if you sign in with a free mcbflow.com account (Settings › Sync across devices, or the Data menu), your books (titles, authors, status, progress, ratings, notes, quotes with their notes, questions and Daily Review schedule, cover links) and reading sessions, plus your daily, yearly and Daily Review goals, are copied to your account so your other devices match. Your PDF, EPUB and audio files are never uploaded; they stay on the device you added them on, along with their covers, your place in them, bookmarks, reader settings and theme. The account database is run by Supabase (servers in the eastern United States); only your account can read your records. Signing out stops syncing and keeps everything on this device. Export or delete your synced data, or delete your account, on the mcbflow.com account page; more detail is in the mcbflow.com privacy policy.
  • The website host may keep standard request logs (IP address, browser type, time of visit), as nearly every website does.
  • Links inside books open in a new tab only when you click them. Images that a book or saved web page links to on other websites are not loaded.

Selling, sharing and your choices

reading.mcbflow.com doesn't sell or share personal information and doesn't use it for advertising. Unless you sign in to sync, the developer never receives your data, so they can't view, recover or delete it for you. Use the delete, backup and restore controls instead (and the account page for synced data). Don't store passwords or other highly sensitive information in notes.

Children

reading.mcbflow.com is a general-audience tool, not directed at children under 13. Accounts are optional and are for people 13 and older.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will appear here with a new date.

Terms of use

By using reading.mcbflow.com, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

What it is

A free reading tracker and reader that works inside your browser. It opens PDF, EPUB, audio, text, Markdown and web page files you choose, and text you paste. It doesn't upload, host, share or publish your files.

Your files

Only add files you have the right to use. You're responsible for the files you open and what you do with them. The app doesn't remove copy protection: it won't open DRM-protected EPUBs or password-protected PDFs.

Read aloud, text mode, text recognition and logging can make mistakes

Text pulled out of a PDF can be out of order or incomplete, text recognized from scanned pages can contain errors, header and footer cleanup can occasionally hide a real line, voices can mispronounce words, and automatic page counts are estimates. Check the original when accuracy matters.

Use it fairly

Don't use the app to break the law, or try to disrupt, overload or tamper with the site that hosts it.

Ownership

The reading.mcbflow.com name, design and code belong to the developer, except the third-party parts listed under Credits, which belong to their owners. Your files, notes and data stay yours.

No warranty

reading.mcbflow.com is provided free, “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. The developer doesn't promise that it will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that it will keep your data safe. Your library lives only in this browser and can be lost if browser data is cleared, so keep backups of anything important.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the developer won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data, arising from your use of reading.mcbflow.com, even if told they were possible. Some states don't allow certain warranty disclaimers or limits on damages, so some of these limits may not apply to you.

Other people's software

The app uses open-source libraries and fonts under their own licenses, listed under Credits. Book search is provided by Open Library, and online voices by third parties, under their own terms.

Changes

The app may change or stop being available at any time. These terms may be updated too, and the date below shows the latest version. If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
